A link at the bottom led me to some fun with chocolate and marshmallows. Would have liked to have found the original linked article, though. I'm SO doing that in the spring when I'm student teaching 8th grade physics!

Oh, some older microwaves that don't have turntables have 'mixers' which cause minor perturbations in the microwaves as they exit the magnitron (or modern equivalent). This might cause multiple overlapping standing wave patterns, but I think the experiment would still work.
